My thoughts on "character defense" [Jun. 3rd, 2011|12:13 pm]

[mood |bitchybitchy]

I personally think the fact that fictional characters have passionate defense forces is ridiculous. I mean, come on, how childish and delusional can people get? They're fictional characters, their feelings are not going to be hurt if someone calls them "bubblehead", "asshole", or "disgrace to all of humanity".

It is because of this that I've come to despise most characters whom people are so quick to rabidly defend. Not all, mind you, I still quite like Ninian and Marcus because I find them interesting, even if their defenders are on the scary side. I'm quick to defend Mai and Paul myself, I will admit, because people's reasons for hating them are quite stupid.

But when it comes to eyesores like Ash Ketchum, Miaka Yuuki, Eliwood, Roy, Aang and Eirika? Ugh. Spare me.

For example, on a Pokemon forum I pointed out that Ash is a Purity Sue in the first movie. I mean, come on: He thrashes another trainer at the start with all his first level Pokemon, his Charizard puts up the best fight against its clone, his Pokemon are the only ones that try to fight off Mewtwo's Pokeballs and of course his Pikachu is the hardest for them to catch despite them easily catching Pokemon such as Gyrados, Rapidash, Ninetails and Tentacruel. That's so unrealistic. And don't even get me started on that ending. *gags* He's so pure that he stops a fight by sacrificing his life and is brought back by the power of magical tears? That's so Disney Princess.

Naturally, I get "called out" by oversensitive Ash fans who whine that he is too a good trainer, that he can't be pure otherwise his words and begging would have worked rather than him having to risk his life. Wallbanger in the form of discussion, I swear.

There are characters I might have liked if not for their rabid defenders, too. I wanted to like Hector because his personality was much more refreshing than Eliwood's and Lyn's. He was a man with style, not afraid to flout convention to get things done. He wasn't your boring, stereotypical hero who "did the right thing" just to look good.

But then, the stat whores and the fanboys poured in, creaming themselves over his badassery and attitude, claiming that if you didn't like him or had any complaints about him you must be a lackwit (or "n00b" as they so rudely put it)...plus, as time went on I began to find him obnoxious and irritating. His so-called refreshing personality was a symptom of Jerk Stu: He was rude, arrogant, insensitive and stupid, yet everyone still loved him to pieces and he never suffered anything for his actions. Everything he did was a "crowning moment of awesome" to these fans! So I now hate Hector with the passion of a thousand burning suns, and it's all the fault of his fans.

Then there are characters I never liked, but hate even more now thanks to their drooling fans. Specifically, Anne and Stanley Chan from The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan. Yes, even an obscure series such as this one has idiots in its very tiny fandom.

Anne is really not that interesting to begin with, and the more I watched the more I found her to be a bratty straw feminist. Taking it as a personal affront because she couldn't go to a ball game or drive a car? Leaving her poor brother in the lurch by not tossing the board back to him? Insisting a woman crook could be as "good" as a man when being a crook is nothing to be proud of? Suzie may not be that much more interesting, but at least she's not a stuck up brat.

And God forbid you point any of these things out, her defenders will swoop down upon you like a band of hawks! Well, excuse me for stating my nice clear opinion on this girl and pointing out several truths about her that you might not want to accept.

And Stanley. Ugh. Quite possibly the most irritating character who isn't a main hero whom I've ever come across. I was told that "if this fandom were bigger, Henry and Stanley would be thought of as another case of Mario and Luigi". Nothing could be further from the truth! Instead, I find the older and more capable brother much more likeable, while the silly younger brother gave me a migrane just to watch! He's stupid, clumsy, never takes anything seriously and his voice pisses me off to no ends.

But if you say one negative thing about him, his fans will whine "but he's so funny and wacky, how can you NOT love him, and he's sooo much smarter than he lets on!". I honestly feel quite sorry for Henry...no, for the whole family, having to put up with this idiot. Episode ten is actually my favorite because for once, Henry isn't afraid to be brutal with him like he deserves. "But Henry CARES for his brother", people argue. Maybe canon insists he does, but personally, if I were Henry I would have disowned Stanley long ago. Someone as smart as him should not waste time caring about someone who's nothing more than a liability and is unworthy of being a son of the great detective Chan.

So there you have it. Character defense is 99% ridiculous, and people who partake in it need to grow up. And since a certain Alyssia Wells is going to read this and react predictably, I'll save her the time and say yes, I am referring to you and your ridiculous Character Defense Sailor Scout business. I find it hard to believe you're only a few years younger than me when you act like you're ten.

You know, it's funny you mention that they're fictional characters, because the way you hate those characters who are fictional seems a little... I dunno, obsessive? Hating characters because of their fans? Hating a main character *coughAshcough* without recognizing his flaws? Seriously? What's next, you're going to bash Professor Layton?

*rolls eyes* And as usual, the so-called Sanity Brigade shows up to accuse me of hypocrisy. I reserve the right to hate characters because of their fans, and Ash's flaws are the exact reason I hate him. It's canaon that refuses to recognize his flaws, not me.

If I play the games and end up disliking him, I'll certainly voice that opinion.

Huh, the "Sanity Brigade"? Sorry, hun, but it sounds like you're way over in your head if you start thinking things like that. There's no such thing as that.

And by fans, do you mean regular fans, or fantwits? There ARE people who likes Hector for different reasons than the fantwits. I like Hector in FE6, so when I got to play him in FE7, I was pretty happy to see his characterization in that game. My love for him has nothing to do with stats.

...Canaon? What's that, and is it edible? And about Ash, this IS a Japanese kid's show. He is the main character of a KID'S SHOW. Really pathetic there, honey.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Well, you and many others certainly act like it, playing the Proper Fandom Opinions Police anytime someone dares to think differently than you.

Well, good for you. But so many of his fans are fantwits, it's entirely their fault I can't stand him.

...that was a typo. Making fun of people for typos is immature and not the least bit amusing!

Actually, that sounds more like you. So someone doesn't like a character I like, for good reasons? I'm not going to go down their throat and tell them to love said character. That's not my thing.

And why are you listening to stats whores in the first place...?

Well, excuse me to try and lighten up the topic.

Yep, I knew it. The second I started skimming this I knew somewhere you were gonna call me out. What else is new?

Sorry, Cori, but I will never stop defending characters I like from immature fans who bash them for stupid reasons. I don't care if it makes me stupid, immature and delusional. In fact, I'm going to go off on one of my trademark tangents right now just to piss you off!

1) Ash is too hot-blooded and impulsive to be a Purity Sue. Those fans were right, if he were so pure he could've ended the fighting with words alone, but since it didn't work, cue the heroic sacrifice. If he were really pure he wouldn't have needed magical tears to revive him because he wouldn't have gotten himself killed. As for the battle? God forbid a main character's talents are put on display! Ash is a good trainer, you just refuse to accept it because it means admitting you're wrong.

2) Hector is NOT a Jerk Stu! He's called out on his bad behavior several times in canon. And guess what, blaming the character for his rabid fanbase is stupid. I hate rabid stat whoring fanboys too, but it's not Hector's fault he attracts idiots like garbage attracts raccoons.

3) Oh noes, how dare Anne feel left out that she didn't get to spend quality time with her dad and brothers at a baseball game, or jealous that Alan got to drive the car and she didn't. And even if her comments in episode 12 were misguided, so were Tom's, but I don't see you bitching about HIM. Anne is not a bitch or a straw feminist just because she thinks women deserve rights and can be a little bratty sometimes. SHE'S A FUCKING TEENAGER. Oh, and was the jab at Suzie really necessary?

4) So you don't like silly comic relief guys? Fine. But your claims about Stanley being stupid and a liability and unworthy of being his father's son on the forums that day were out of line. There is no evidence in the series that anyone hates Stanley, especially Henry. I'm sorry, but he does care for his brother and I don't think he'd be very happy to know some stuck up fangirl was talking smack about Stanley. And by the way, he WAS pretty nasty in episode 10; Henry's my favorite of the Chan boys and even I wanted to smack him for that crack about "are you sure you're really part of this family?".

So there you have it. Character defenders may be "ridiculous", but no more ridiculous than your blatant hypocrisy. I find it hard to believe that you're older than me and you act like you're ten!

The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan. Yes, even an obscure series such as this one has idiots in its very tiny fandom.

Not until you came along. That subforum was nice and chill and quiet, but when you joined you couldn't handle seeing people praise the characters you didn't like, so you started wank.

You're a fucking moron for dissing Anne Chan, one of the greatest feminist icons in all of animation! She had every right to stand up to her sexist father and leave her idiot brother in the lurch. Of course, the fact that you list that prick Alan as your favorite is no surprise, only antifeminist bitches would criticize Anne while praising him. Fucking bitch. Yeah, I always feel like Alan's genius is a little overlooked. I mean, the dude designed an entire transforming van on his own, give him some more credit! Or at least face time.

I couldn't agree more. Alan is one of the smartest, coolest animated characters ever to grace the small screen, but he's sadly brushed aside in favor of giving spotlight to characters who are already attention hogs such as his bratty sister and that buffoon Henry calls a sidekick. At least Flip is somewhat deserving of all his spotlight, even if I'm not sure he's the best guardian for three young children on potentially dangerous cases.

Well, Cori? Any half-assed defense of your hypocrisy now? *smirk*

You're way too hard on Ash and Annie, especially...yeah, Annie's a little brat sometimes, but her brothers kinda provoke her. And Ash is a good kid! Sure, he does stupid things sometimes but that's why his good friends are there to guide him.

I won't argue that Tom and Alan have a tendency to bait their sister, but she chooses, she makes the choice, to take the bait. If she had shown some restraint and maturity and risen above it, I might have some respect for her.

I cannot imagine anything that would redeem Ash, however. He started off as an idiot and now he's become an inconsistent God Mode Stu. The animators purposely flip-flop between him being an incompetent fool and a cheating God Moder, and expect us to like him all the while.
